With the burgeoning growth in use of smartphones in low-resource regions, location based services are having a lot of potential to serve the marginalized populations. However, in most of the cases the maps are not digitized in these places. Furthermore, maps are often owned by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo!. As a result the local developer fail to develop products for the local populations after paying a big amount of money to the map providers. To this end, I started the OpenStreetMap campaign in Bangladesh. The objective was to raise a community movement to develop our own maps and make that free for all. I started this project by mapping couple of places in Dhaka. Right now, this project has expanded nation-wide, and World Bank has taken up this project as one of their programs in Bangladesh. My current research investigates the interest of marginalized populations in contributing open source products.
