Autism and Voice

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental difference that is widely prevalent in today's world. While there have been many interventions for helping children with ASD in wealthy countries, this issue is fairly unaddressed in most low-resource regions. Furthermore, in places like Bangladesh, there is widespread stigma around Autism, and the parents are often blamed to be the reason for their children's autism. At the same time, the difference of the ASD children is not often treated with patience and respect. These all have created a critical problem in the life of the parents, and the developmental process of the autistic children. To this end, I started working the Autism Welfare Foundation (AWF) in a project with Prof. Ehsan Hoque (the a PhD Student at MIT) to develop computer games to develop the children's speaking skills. Then I advanced that work by developing a number of computer games for loudness, intelligibility, and logic in their speaking words. We also developed a computer games that would support a teacher to teach a class combined with ASD and neuro-typical students. Recently, we have developed a mobile phone based development monitoring system for the parents that, besides tracking the progress of the Autistic children, allows the parents to get information and share their emotions with a sympathetic and like-minded group.
